How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Around 7yrs now

What made you decide to give 7 Mile Strength & Fitness a try?

Moved to island from RSA where I started CrossFit a few months before. I actually went to CrossFit Cayman for my first few sessions on island but just didn’t feel the “vibe” there.

What was the hardest part when you started out and how did you overcome that?

All round fitness and underestimating a WOD. I used to do daily ‘bro seshs’ and mountain hiking on most weekends, so I thought I had a pretty good all round fitness…ah hum…the combination of weight and cardio mixed together got me breathing out of every hole in my body! Still does. Regularly. So, still overcoming that!

You’ve had a few back issues but started working with Coach Trevor on it. Tell us a little bit about how that’s helped. How are you feeling these days?

Yeh, my lower back been iffy for the better part of 2yrs but the last year was debilitating. Many hours in an office chair is the main culprit. Got to a point where even leaning over the basin to brush my teeth was painful! Enter Trev. He’s been truly fantastic and a pool of wisdom! Coaching and motivating me through the rehab process. Thank you, sir! The rest of the coaches deserve a shout out as well, they’ve all been super supportive and knowledgeable around the do’s and don’ts for my lower back during WODs. Ready to start lifting some weight again!

How are coping through this very strange time? Working more? Relaxing more? Reading? TV?

Jeez, real arb times hey!! It’s been manageable, I’ve been really busy with work and so haven’t felt boredom hit all! Making a point to workout everyday at midday to get some needed rays and sweat off those extra pounds of beers and snacks! Really miss the outdoors though! And watching live sport at a bar!

Can we take credit for introducing you to your future wife?

Haha most def yes!! Destiny and Jagermeister.

What’s your favorite thing about South Africa?

Things…The African bush, biltong and brandy. And of course, my family and friends!

Anything people at 7 Mile Strength & Fitness don’t know about you?

I can smell the color blue…no nothing that springs to mind.

Anything crazy on your bucket list? (bungee jumping, sky diving, hiking?)

Done most of them already, but I would probably say the biggest and longest one would be doing an inter-continental offroad motorcycle trip. Also taking up paragliding at some point. Mount trashmore?!

What is your favourite WOD and why?

If I had to choose, probably 12 days of Christmas…long, steady, involves weights and some form of gymnastic movement…brutal and the whole body is pumped afterwards. You also know its holiday time then!

What is your least favourite WOD and why?

Anything with overhead squats! Body doesn’t like those at all! Poor mobility, likely.

What has been your biggest surprise about doing CrossFit?

The community, 100%! The last two months worth of support and interaction between members and coaches clearly defines it right.

Would you recommend 7 Mile Strength & Fitness to others and if so, why?
Absolutely!! The above point mentioned, the new friendships built and the Christmas party! What a razzle!

Thanks Tony, we are proud to have you as our May 7 Miler.
